Top 10 Tips for Keeping Your Home Secure Over the Holiday Season
If you’re going to be away from home over the holiday season, then you’ll want the reassurance that your house is safe and secure.
Follow these ten top tips to ensure your property is fully protected.
1) Secure all doors
It may sound obvious, but when you have multiple family members coming and going, you can sometimes forget to lock the door.
If you’re going away, make sure you actually use every lock that’s fitted to your doors. You may have got into the habit of just using the main one rather than utilising top and bottom locks.
2) Lock all windows
If you’re going to be away, don’t just close all your windows. Make sure they’re locked. It’s extremely simple to fit window locks. Even if you don’t have them all over the house, you should prioritise the downstairs windows.
3) Obscure the view into your home
Go outside and check to see what’s visible inside your house. It’s not worth putting temptation in the way of a potential burglar. If it’s obvious you’re away, and expensive electrical equipment can be seen, an intruder will take advantage of the opportunity.
Obscure the view as much as possible with blinds and curtains.
4) Put your lights on timer switches
It’s a simple matter to install timer switches, so lights come on in the evening. You can also purchase photosensitive bulbs that light up when darkness falls. This will give the appearance of someone being at home.
Motion sensor lights that come on when someone approaches the property will also act as a deterrent to intruders.
5) Set any alarm systems
If you’ve got an alarm of any sort, then remember to set it before you go away.
There are many different types of alarms available, along with monitors and cameras. It makes sense to link these via a smart security system that you can monitor from your mobile device while you’re away.
6) Lock valuables away
Most intruders are opportunists. So, don’t make it easy for them. Lock away valuables in a safe and don’t leave expensive items or quantities of money lying around to be easily pocketed.
7) Check garages and sheds are secure
You may have secured the house, but have you left sheds or garages unlocked?
If you use your shed or garage to house expensive garden items, bicycles or gym equipment, don’t let them become an easy target.
A heavy-duty lock on an outbuilding will keep it secure and act as a visual deterrent.
8) Let your neighbours know you’ll be away
If your neighbours know you’re away from home, they’ll be alert to any unusual activity. Give them a contact number so they can let you know if they see anything suspicious.
9) Don't share the fact that you’re on holiday
Only tell immediate friends and neighbours that you’re going away. If you tell too many people or share details on social media, you could find this information finds its way into the wrong hands.
10) Get a security expert to give you advice
If you’re very concerned about leaving your property unattended, call in a security expert to give you advice. You don’t want to spend your seasonal break worrying about burglars.
